Not every pain requires dope or pain killing medications. In fact, for many folks, the right choice of interventional pain management is not opiates, but is in a drug-free, non-pharmaceutical, holistic approach. For example, there are folks who have a history of substance abuse, and they know they have a problem with taking opiate medications appropriately. Many of these people will tell you they do not WANT opiate medications because it is too easy to get back into their substance abuse habits. There are some who hate the way pain killing medications make them feel. The dopey spacey "high" feeling that some folks take pain killers to achieve, if they abuse drugs, makes some folks feel horrible, and for that reason, they do not want Vicodin or similar medications.

Also, some employers will not allow you to work on drugs or under the influence of drugs. The very nature of some jobs is such that it may endanger
your life or the lives of others to be under the influence of pain killers. Pilots,
surgeons, heavy equipment operators, policemen, firemen, oilfield workers, and many others, often just cannot do their job safely while on analgesic medications.
